Class description:

In this Saturday morning class for 2nd - 5th graders, we will focus on a different theme each month, while experimenting with different media each week: drawing, painting, printmaking, pastels, collage, and more. Students will create expressive, imaginative art inspired by activities like studying spring flowers, looking at slides of famous paintings, and learning about the world through the traditional art of many cultures. In these classes students will learn art history and have fun exploring color, texture, pattern, line, and abstract and surreal imagery. Students will be encouraged to create freely and to make "happy accidents" while learning new art skills!

March Theme: Springtime & Flowers
Week 1 (March 8th): Botanical Drawing - we will look at a variety of real flowers and practice sketching them in pencil on paper
Week 2 (March 15th): Sunflower Painting - we will study Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" and make our own bright, sunny paintings of real sunflowers using thick applications of tempera paint.
Week 3 (March 22nd): Floral Printmaking - we will explore block printing techniques to design and print lovely notecards with floral motifs
Week 4 (March 29th): Abstract Pastels - we will examine the close-up flower images of Georgia O'Keeffe and zoom in on real flowers to create abstract images using chalk pastels on paper
